The Works Progress Administration was a job creation program implemented by President Franklin Roosevelt during the 1930s. The WPA did a lot of things; it built roads, sewers, water systems, dams, libraries, public buildings, and hospitals and schools. The WPA also expanded our national airline system with new airports. Leading up to World War II many airports were converted to military use to support America’s war effort. These airports have iconic status for local residents and during this class we will examine the impact that large airports, whether they are commercial or military, have on local economies.
